Dynamite Entertainment & Declan Shalvey Expand Partnership with New The Terminator Comics

The Terminator #1 (2024) Main Cover Declan Shalvey

Dynamite Entertainment have been on a bit of a roll over the last 12 months. Having acquired the rights to a variety of properties from Warner Bros., to hitting huge milestones with their ongoing Vampirella series and releasing multiple Gargoyles books, it only seems to be going up for the comics publisher.

Adding to that great news, and to the host of series based on classic franchises they currently offer, Dynamite have announced via AIPT and other sources that a new The Terminator comic series will debut later this year.

Skynet is here, and its got two fathers

Releasing in October 2024, The Terminator #1 will be written by Declan Shalvey, with art by Luke Sparrow.

Declan Shalvey was announced as the writer at the tip of Dynamite’s licencing spear in October of last year, which it became public that he would be the writer of an ongoing Thundercats series. That issue broke records with the number of pre-orders issue #1 received, and went on to get favourable critical reception too. We were a part of that chorus, finding a lot to love about its charm and sense of style.

Luke Sparrow, the artist that joins Shalvey, has a brilliant style that evokes the likes of Tom Reilly and even Shalvey himself. Recently, he’s worked on titles like Star Trek: Resurgence and the upcoming Old Dog: Operations. His characterful yet minimalist style is perfectly suited to Shalvey’s body of work – a good omen for the creative partnership yet to come.

What sets this new run apart?

Shalvey and Sparrow’s The Terminator comic is set to be ‘a more stripped-down, pulpy approach’ that focuses on ‘new situations, new dilemmas in each issue’.

Shalvey goes on to explain in the official press release that the title will feature ‘mostly done-in-one stories, but as the series progresses there may be some recognizable faces’ – hinting at the potential return of fan favourites like Sarah Connor, perhaps?

The black and white preview art that has been released stuns with a tremendous balance between quieter, more atmospheric moments and tense action.

Dynamite’s explosive year

As previously noted, Dynamite announced that Shalvey would be headlining their new Thundercats series. On top of that, they also announced a Space Ghost series from David Pepose (Savage Avengers, Punisher: The Bullet that Follows) and Jonathan Lau (Vampirella Strikes, Unbreakable Red Sonja), and a Jonny Quest title that launches its first issue in August 2024.

This comes in a year where multiple publishers have had breakout success, and yet titles like Thundercats are still rising to the top of the pile. Marvel Comics have broken sales records with the launch of their new Ultimate Universe, and fellow independent publisher Image has seen soaring sales with their Energon Universe titles.
